Who we are
Historic clan seat and family home...
Castle Leod, the Seat of Clan Mackenzie, is one of the best-preserved historic castles in the Scottish Highlands. Today, it is home to Clan Chief, John Mackenzie, 5th Earl of Cromartie, whose family has lived here for over 500 years.
Recognised as the real-life inspiration for Outlander’s Castle Leoch, it continues to captivate with its rich history and timeless allure. Nestled near the Victorian spa town of Strathpeffer, Castle Leod stands majestically against the backdrop of Ben Wyvis, surrounded by impressive trees and thriving wildlife. With battles long past, we are now dedicated to its preservation for future generations to explore and enjoy.

Our History
The seat of Clan Mackenzie has many a tale to tell...
Mysterious Picts, Norse Jarls and Clan Mackenzie chiefs are just some of the colourful characters who have called Castle Leod, and its earlier incarnations, home. Early settlements here date back long before clans had names or Earls held titles. Its later inhabitants—whether loyal to their king or defiant of British rule— have been instrumental in shaping Highland, Scottish, and British history.
From the ruthless justice of the 'Tutor of Kintail' to Bonnie Bell's daring journey while pregnant to save her husband, the 3rd Earl, from execution in the Tower of London, the Mackenzie family story is one of resilience, bravery and adventure.

Our Community
From health-giving spa village to cultural centre...
Our connection to Strathpeffer remains as strong as when Anne Hay Mackenzie, Countess of Cromartie and Mistress of the Robes to Queen Victoria, first championed its natural healing springs. Today, the village continues to flourish with a vibrant community, thriving local businesses, and lively events.
Strathpeffer Golf Club, Caberfeidh Shinty team and Ross County Cricket Club all play within the Castle grounds. We also take great pride in hosting the Strathpeffer Highland Gathering, a yearly festival of traditional competitive sports, Highland dancing and local flair that celebrates our region's distinctive heritage.
