Castle Leod's restoration and repair is an ongoing project at the heart of Clan Mackenzie.
Castle Leod is under the protection of the Clan Mackenzie Charitable Trust (CMCT), a registered charity created in 1990. The CMCT is an educational buildings trust that cares for the fabric of Castle Leod and encourages visitors to come and learn about Scotland’s history and heritage.
It is an ongoing job to repair and restore this historic Grade A-listed building, a little like painting the Forth Bridge. Always at risk of damage from strong Highland winds and water ingress, we are dedicated to actioning repair and reinforcement because the Castle is of national and international importance and, as such, must be preserved.
Re-roofing took place in 1991 after the roof failed and allowed water to damage the upper floors of the old tower. In 2015, the tower chimney heads and east battlements were upgraded to protect historic interiors. The Victorian flat roof was restored in 2020 enabling the development of a visitor room complete with informative display boards and a seating area to enjoy tea and coffee. The Earl of Cromartie's extensive personal agate collection is displayed in glass cabinets, too. Work completed in 2021 enabled visitor access to a new stairwell. Other recent works include repairs to the skylight of the billiard room which suffered storm damage that could've ruined the Edwardian billiard table.
The next stage is to continue with the restoration of the upper floors of the old tower and create a small letting apartment on the lower level. When completed, this scheme will give the Castle more income to be invested in securing its future whilst keeping it aired and fired.
Castle Leod is a grand, old lady: a landmark worth saving. It is a great asset to the local community of Strathpeffer by bringing in tourists from around the world and boosting the wider local economy. It is here for visitors and locals, alike, to enjoy.
